When thinking about researching, there are many things to consider:
- Keeping in mind your schedule and other commitments, how much time do you have for research? Will you need to create more time for research? We recommend finding at least 8 hours per week to research, but no less than 5. For most projects, the mentor will be flexible and work with your schedule. You will want to check with them to be sure before you make any final agreements.
- Is this the proper time to do research? Many majors have standard terms to begin researching. You may find, though, that you’d like to start ahead of that time. An advisor or major professor can give you feedback on your plans.
- As far as types of research, consider if you’d rather be in a lab working with scientific equipment, working with people, or doing informational research. Also, please be as specific as possible about the type of research. Say if you’d like to work in a lab doing Alzheimer’s research or in the Library’s special collections. You will never be stuck in something since you drive the research process. On the other hand, if you don’t give us very specific information on your interests, it is much harder to help you find a match.
